Campeche

Campeche is in the north of the Campeche state, on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico (my second sea/ocean of the trip!) and I arrived at 3:30pm and leave at 7am tomorrow. So quick turn around.

The reasons I wanted to come here so desperately, even just for a few hours, are as follows:

1. It's already on the same bus route to the next destination I'm heading towards. Thus cutting an 8.5hr bus journey into two journeys of 6hrs and 2.5hrs.

2. I heard that the malecón (boulevard along the coast) is stunning and well worth watching the sunsets

3. There are some incredible evening light shows (these turned out to be fountains with water dancing to 90s ballads - what none of us realised we needed until we were there!)

4. The entire of the historical city centre (which was once encompassed in thick city fortress walls) is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Bonus:

I did a night walking tour with a dramatic presentation (in Spanish) of all the pirate legends of Campeche!

I absolutely loved it here so much, and I'd say I'd want to stay longer, but it's so small I genuinely feel I've seen all I want to. Of course I could take local day trips to nearby waterfalls and pyramids and so on - I've already done so much of that with more to come next week. All in all, I'm happy with the time I got here but would definitely recommend it to travellers as a stop between Palenque and Mérida.
